Classroom Parties and Wellness

Suggestions for Elementary and Intermediate School Class Parties

CLASSROOM PARTIES

In an effort to comply with the Federal Child Nutrition Program guidelines and the district’s wellness policy to promote healthy food and lifestyle choices in schools, the district would like to decrease the amount of high sugar snacks consumed in classroom celebrations. This includes birthday parties. The following are some suggestions to help accomplish this goal. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

BEVERAGES

Please, NO soda pop.

Acceptable alternatives include: bottled water, flavored water, juice boxes (100% juice), lemonade. The portion size should be up to an 8 oz. serving.

Some Name brands include: Juicy Juice, Capri Sun, Minute Maid, Crystal Light, Ice Mountain, and others.

FOOD

If a high sugar food is desired, please only one per student. Examples are one cupcake, one cookie, or one small individual bag of cookies. Oatmeal or raisin cookies would also be a healthier choice.

Healthy snack choices include yogurt, fruit, fresh fruit and dip, fresh vegetables and dip, individual bags of 100 calorie snacks, cheese crackers, cereal snack mix, pretzels, dried fruit, trail mix, granola bars, animal crackers, popcorn, and pudding.

3” submarine sandwiches or pizza slices.

FURTHER CONSIDERATION

Parties are designed to be a snack, not a meal. Please bring portion sizes that are appropriate for the age of the student.

Please also be aware that some children in the class may have food allergies. The most common allergies are to peanuts, milk and egg. If possible, please avoid items that contain peanuts. Contact your child’s teacher to find out if it is a concern for their classroom.
